PhD Studentship in Arts & Health (funded by CW+)
Centre for Performance Science, Royal College of Music (in collaboration with Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Imperial College London)
The effects of the arts on care of older adults in a hospital environment
A PhD studentship is available from September 2015 for a candidate to undertake research funded by CW+.
The project will explore how the arts (including visual arts, digital arts, music, theatre and dance) can be used to enhance patient experience and clinical outcomes on wards for older adults at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. CW+ runs the arts programme at the hospital; it is one of the largest arts-in-health programmes in the country, including a vibrant programme for elderly patients which is being enhanced from May 2015 onwards. The PhD studentship will offer the opportunity to research the effects of various arts interventions and inform future decisions on arts projects on the older adult wards.
The PhD student will conduct and report research including (1) mixed-methods quantitative and qualitative psychological and physiological assessment of the effects of arts interventions on aspects of patient care and experience and (2) theoretical considerations of the mechanisms behind these effects.
The value of the studentship will be full-time (UK/EU) tuition fees and a maintenance grant of £14,057 per annum. The successful candidate will be expected to complete the research within three years.
