The day of your audition

Arriving at the RCM…

You should plan to arrive at the RCM at least 30 minutes before your scheduled audition time. Visit our Location page for a map and information on how to get to the RCM. It is advisable to allow extra time for travel into or acrossLondon, but in the event of unavoidable, please telephone the Registry Officer on 020 7591 4362 immediately, so that, wherever possible, alternative arrangements can be made.

Once you are here…

Upon arrival at the RCM, you should find out the room in which your audition will take place from the steward in the entrance hall. You will have 20 minutes warm-up time with your accompanist. Whilst we recommend that you bring your own accompanist with whom you have worked in preparation for your audition, the RCM can provide an accompanist. If you require the services of an RCM accompanist, please remember to bring copies of the music for their use. Please do not send copies in advance. Composers are interviewed instead of auditioned, therefore, the information regarding warm-up and accompanists etc. does not apply.

Your audition…

Most auditions/interviews will last approximately 20 minutes. You should ensure that you are familiar with the audition requirements. Technical work (scales, arpeggios etc) may be required of some instrumentalists. Sight-reading may be required of all performers.

In the case of piano, strings and voice, where numbers of applicants are very high, auditioning takes place over two rounds. The first audition panel will inform you whether you are to be sent to the second round.

Scholarships…

All candidates who audition in person and receive a sufficiently high mark are automatically considered for Scholarships. Scholarships are not available to those applying for Experience Programmes or candidates who audition by recordings. Some candidates may be required to perform again, for another panel, later in the day. It would therefore be helpful, if you could ensure that you are available for the remainder of the day.

What happens next?

The RCM will inform you of the result of your audition via the CUKAS Track website as soon as possible after the auditions. Decisions about Scholarships are usually made at the end of the audition period and applicants who are offered an award will receive a Scholarship letter by mail. Exceptionally, an applicant may be offered a Scholarship on the day of their audition. The College cannot enter into correspondence over the results of auditions.

If you have any questions about your forthcoming audition, please do not hesitate to contact David Harpham, Registry Officer on +44 (0)20 7591 4362.

Good luck!
