English language requirements

If your first language is not English, you must achieve a satisfactory standard in an approved test in English.

In April 2011 the UK Border Agency changed the English language requirements for Tier 4 (General) Student visa applications. All Visa Applicants must now have a level of English language commensurate with CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) level B2 or above in all 4 components (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

The most commonly used tests and permitted scores are:

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) - score of 5.5 in all 4 components (note that an average score of 5.5 is no longer acceptable)
  • TOEFL IBT (Listening-17,Reading– 18, Speaking – 20, Writing – 17 (total of 72)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) – score of 51 in all 4 disciplines.
