Gown Hire

How to Order Your Gown

You must wear academic dress if you wish to participate in the ceremony. Gowns and hoods can be hired from the RCM’s supplier, William Northam.

They operate an online ordering system, and you should go to www.williamnortham.co.uk and follow the instructions to hire your gown. Please note that the RCM’s academic dress does not include a mortarboard.

Please make sure you have organised your gown hire by Monday 26 June 2017 at the latest. After this date Northams will be preparing the gowns for dispatch and may not be able to accommodate a late order.

If you wish to buy a gown, please contact Northams directly for details of prices and how to order. You should contact Northams as soon as possible, as the gowns for purchase are made to order and take some time to produce.

Collecting Your Gown

Your gown should be collected on Thursday 6 July 2017 between 9am and 12.30pm. This is to avoid delays and queues on the day of the ceremony. Gowns can be collected from the following rooms:

  • Corelli Room - undergraduates (also enquiries and returns)
  • LG12 - postgraduates

You should make every effort to collect your gown on 6 July. However, in the event that you really cannot come to the RCM on that day (for example if you are flying in from overseas), Northams staff will be available on the morning of Graduation from 8.30am.

You must return your gown to the Corelli Room by 5pm on the day of Graduation

What to Wear for Graduation

The RCM has no formal dress code for Graduation and you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in under your gown.  However, this is an important ceremonial occasion, and most students dress smartly. When you collect your gown, Northams’ staff will show you how to put it on properly.

HANDY CLOTHING HINT!

You will find the gown and hood are made of quite heavy material and you may need to bring a safety pin or two to keep them in place. It is recommended to avoid wearing dresses or blouses made of very light-weight material, as you may need to attach a safety pin and this could risk damaging your clothing.
