Miranda Francis

ARAM, MA, LRAM, ARCM, PGCE

Miranda joined the staff of the RCM in 2008 as BMus Area Leader in Aural Training. She studied Double Bass, Organ and Piano Accompaniment at the Royal Academy of Music, winning several academic prizes including the May Turtle Prize for Outstanding Aural Perception. Over the past twenty five years she has led music departments in both state and independent schools, and was formerly Head of Academic Music at the Purcell School, where she founded the Jazz Department. As a passionate advocate of music education, she was appointed RCM Head of Junior Programmes in 2013.

Miranda’s research interests include performance assessment methods, the comparison of informal and formal learning practices and comparative pedagogical approaches to aural training. In addition to her extensive teaching and lecturing commitments, Miranda is Principal Examiner of Performance at Advanced Level for Edexcel and she is an advisor for the Mayor’s Music Fund. She also runs teachers’ courses all over the country and has published several articles for academic journals, including Classroom Music.
