Lord & Lady Lurgan Piano Accompaniment Fellow
John Cuthbert studied piano accompaniment at the Royal College of Music where he received tuition from Simon Lepper and Roger Vignoles as well as taking part in masterclasses given by Sarah Walker CBE and Patricia MacMahon. During his time at the RCM John won accompanist prizes in the College’s English Song Competition, Lieder Competition and Lies Askonas Competition. He also performed alongside Emilie Renard in the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall and with Edward Grint at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon. Performances since graduating have included a performance at the Wigmore hall with Katherine Crompton as part of the Kathleen Ferrier International Singing Competition and chamber performances with the Billroth String Quartet.
In 2015, John became a Samling Artist, having been awarded a place on the prestigious Samling Masterclass week, during which he worked with Yvonne Kenny, John Fisher, Christopher Glynn, and James Baillieu in the beautiful surroundings of Farlam Hall Hotel in Cumbria. This culminated in a performance in Sage Two, Gateshead.
John has also worked with the City of London Sinfonia, London Philharmonic Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra as an orchestral pianist. He joined the LSO in a tour to Salzburg and Lucerne to play celeste in performances of Prokofiev’s Cinderella in August 2012.
As a répétiteur, John worked with Co-Opera Company in their productions of Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Madama Butterfly in 2013 and with the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival Opera Company for their productions of The Mikado, Iolanthe and The Pirates of Penzance in 2014. He has performed live on BBC Radio 3’s programme In Tune with principals of both companies. Since 2014 John has been working with the London Children’s Opera Company and London Cantamusica. He was chorus master for their joint performance of Benjamin Britten’s opera Noye’s Fludde in January this year.
John will work with the vocal faculty.
