Museum of Instruments

The collection comprises some 1,000 musical instruments and accessories, dating from the late 15th century to the present day. Among its treasures are the anonymous clavicytherium c1480 (the earliest known stringed keyboard instrument), an instrument by Dias (thought to be the earliest surviving guitar), wind instruments by Scherer and Denner, harps by Erard and Erat, and other highly important objects.

The collection is a unique resource for research and education for all members of the RCM, as well as for researchers and groups worldwide. Many instruments are on display in the RCM Museum, where students and members of the public can attend a wide range of events, including lecture tours with live demonstrations, seminars, lecture recitals, concerts and special exhibitions.
