The RCM has a dynamic and mixed community of researchers, involved in pure and applied research, as well as aspects of professional practice. This diversity of work can be grouped under four thematic banners:
Complementing these themes are specific research centres as well as areas of activity, embracing as many people as possible from the wider College community, including key Faculty members. These include the Centre for Performance Science and the Centre for Performance History, drawing upon collection materials including the Museum of Instruments and the Portraits and Performance History Collection.
The RCM prioritises an imaginative convergence of theory and practice to encourage innovation and creativity, and to generate a stimulating environment for all staff and students. The RCM’s research environment seeks to empower the widest possible community of reflective practitioners.
Since 1995, the RCM’s highly-successful Doctoral programme has nurtured and hosted innovative work with emphasis in one or more of the following areas: performance, including performance practice and performance science; composition, including electro-acoustic and acousmatic music, and musicology, including empirical studies.
The RCM is also committed to collaborating with external research organisations, including links with the Conservatoires UK (CUK) Research Forum, the AHRC-funded Centre for Musical Performance as Creative Practice (CMPCP), the University of London’s Institute of Musical Research, the British Library, the BBC, as well as individuals and institutions worldwide.
