Musicians of the Future (MoF), a collaboration with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, has enabled 24 pupils each year to benefit from free one-to-one instrumental tuition. RCM students have received specialised, professional training in order to deliver newly commissioned works by composer Sally Greaves, providing a fast-track learning programme for participants.
The one-to-one teaching is complemented by a range of concerts, workshops and masterclasses. Pupils from previous years' Missions joined together to form ensembles which culminated in a Gala showcase in July 2011. Instruments have included cello, trumpet, trombone, flute, saxophone and percussion. We are grateful for the support over the years from the Lucie Allsop Memorial Trust, British Gas and EMI.
These young musicians now hold key roles as part of the New Generation and Young Person Orchestras – organised by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and supported by a vibrant team of RCM musicians. These orchestras meet weekly and are currently working towards major performances for 2012.
Over the past four years the Royal Albert Hall education department has run a series of rock & pop music workshops based around the Teenage Cancer Trust concerts.
Led by a team of professional musicians and supported by RCM students, the workshops give teenage cancer sufferers the chance to work creatively and compose their own pop songs.
