Celebrating 25 years of the Britten Theatre

The Britten Theatre was opened in November 1986 with three magnificent Royal Galas.

Designed by Sir Hugh Casson RA to meet West End standards, it provides a showcase, training ground and launchpad for many of our students.

A treasured space

The Britten Theatre is the home to the renowned RCM International Opera School. Each year it presents two productions, opera scenes and a co-production with the London Handel Festival.

In addition, the Theatre is used for chamber concerts, composition showcases, Big Band performances, and Sparks matinées for school children.

The Theatre is also frequently hired out by other musical organisations for fundraising or corporate events.

Memories and tributes

Over the past 25 years the Britten Theatre has helped launch the careers of operatic stars including consummate artist Gerald Finley and hugely popular Alfie Boe.

To celebrate this anniversary, alumni have sent in their memories of the opening of this much-loved space.

  • Mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly remembers singing at the opening gala and the notorious "Musithon" fundraising event
  • Chairman of the Centenary Appeal Leopold de Rothschild recalls the role he played in making sure the project came to fruition
  • Alumni including soprano Elizabeth Watts and baritone Jonathan Lemalu remember how the Britten Theatre benefited them
