Richard Hetherington

Richard Hetherington  is Head of Music for the Royal Opera. He was appointed to this position in 2017, having worked on the music staff of the Royal Opera since 2001. As a treble, he sang the title role in the British premiere of Henze’s Pollicino, Yniold in Pelléas et Mélisande and First Boy in Die Zauberflöte for the Royal Opera. He has worked with companies including Dutch National Opera and Opera Australia and at the Aix-en-Provence, BBC Proms, Salzburg, Vienna and St Endellion festivals. He made his Royal Opera conducting debut with La sonnambula in 2011, going on to conduct Le nozze di Figaro in 2012, La traviata in 2015 and 2016 and Die Zauberflöte in 2017. Elsewhere he has conducted Don Giovanni (Brussels, Aix-en-Provence Festival tour), Rachmaninoff’s Vespers (Spoleto Festival), Le nozze di Figaro (Aix-en-Provence), Phaedra with Alice Coote and Britten Sinfonia (Wigmore Hall) and opera concerts with Queensland Symphony Orchestra (Australia). He has played continuo with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic, performed in recital with many renowned singers and is a regular guest at Lisa Gasteen’s National Opera School in Brisbane.
