RCM pianist triumphs in Cleveland

Monday 8 August 2011

We are delighted to announce that current student Alexey Chernov has won Second Prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition in the USA.

The competition is an exhilarating ten-day event where approximately 30 young classical pianists from around the world compete in front of audiences and an international jury.

The jury votes at the end of each round, advancing a diminishing number of pianists until four finalists remain. In the final round, Alexey performed Brahms’ Concerto no 1 with the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra and received a cash prize presented by Jim and Dede Storer of the George B. Storer Foundation.

Earlier this year Alexey, along with recent graduate Alexander Romanovsky, won prizes at the XIV Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow.

This is a major achievement for these performers in such monumental competitions.
