ROSL Success for Consone Quartet

The Consone Quartet, which features three Royal College of Music students and alumni, has won the Ensembles A final of the 2016 Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition. This is the first time a period string ensemble has taken the honour. The quartet’s success follows Block4, a recorder group from the RCM’s Historical Performance Faculty, achieving similar acclaim in 2014.

The news comes in the same week that RCM violinist and quartet member Magdalena Loth-Hill received the Mills Williams Medal. Magdalena studies with violin professors Itzhak Rashkovsky, Adrian Butterfield and Lucy Russell. Fellow violinist Agata Daraskaite graduated from the RCM in 2014 and cellist George Ross completed his studies at the College in 2013.

The Consone Quartet perform at the Cadogan Hall on Wednesday 1 June while judges decide the winner of the Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition Gold Medal. The Gold Medal is awarded to one of the artists from the solo performance finals. This year two RCM students are in the running, violinist Emily Sun and saxophonist Philip Attard.

ROSL ARTS is the arts division of the Royal Over-Seas League, and for over 50 years has developed a diverse portfolio of arts activities in Music, Visual Arts and Literature, devoted to the career development of talented young professional artists and musicians from the UK and the Commonwealth. Recent RCM winners include saxophonist Huw Wiggin (2014) and baritone Morgan Pearse (2013).
