Gabriele Rossi Rognoni appointed to Personal Chair of Material Culture and Music

The Royal College of Music has appointed Museum Curator Gabriele Rossi Rognoni to a Personal Chair of Material Culture and Music.

Gabriele has been Curator of the Royal College of Music Museum since 2014 and is President of the Committee of Music Museums of the International Council of Museums. Before joining the RCM he was Curator of the Medici Collection of Musical Instruments at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence and Adjunct Professor of History of Music, Musical Analysis and History of Musical Instruments at the University of Florence. He was Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in Conservation and Sylvan and Pamela Coleman Fellow in Curatorship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter at the Institut für Musikforschung Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin.

His current research focusses on the cultural and symbolic role of musical objects and their relationship with people.

Professor Gabriele Rossi Rognoni, comments: 'I am thrilled at this development of my Royal College of Music role which will allow me to strengthen further the collaboration with students and colleagues in exploring the RCM's rich collections and the interaction between music, people and musical objects. I hope to develop a new understanding of the social, historical and current reciprocal implications of material culture studies and music performance and add this element to the RCM’s outstanding and diversified profile.'
