Trio Apaches appointed RCM Piano Trio in Association

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Trio Apaches as Piano Trio in Association. The trio, which includes RCM professors Ashley Wass (keyboard) and Thomas Carroll (cello) alongside Matthew Trusler (violin) – all acclaimed soloists in their own right – formed in 2012 and has quickly established an active and prominent presence on the international concert scene. 

As Piano Trio in Association at the Royal College of Music, Trio Apaches will give a series of lunchtime recitals and offer chamber music coaching to RCM students throughout the year. For their first concert, they will join forces with RCM percussionists to perform Victor Derevianko’s arrangement of Shostakovich’s Symphony no 15 on Thursday 21 May (booking opens Wednesday 8 April). 

On their exciting new association with the RCM, Trio Apaches say: “We’re looking forward to developing a close relationship with one of the world’s most prestigious musical institutions and hope this will be a long and fruitful collaboration. What's more, the opportunity to work closely with students and members of the faculty on imaginative projects is a really exciting prospect for us.” 

Known for their innovative and engaging approach to chamber music performance, the trio have developed a reputation for presenting popular works in challenging and unfamiliar contexts, as seen in their debut recording which juxtaposes an arrangement of Debussy's La Mer for piano trio by Sally Beamish with the composer’s own trio for voice and piano trio, The Seafarer. The album, which also features narration by Sir Willard White, was released on Orchid Classics in 2014 to much acclaim, with critics noting Trio Apaches’ “virtuosic”, “rich-toned” and “rhythmically taut” playing (The Strad, November 2014).
