Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece Sweeney Todd tells the macabre tale of an exiled barber returning to London to seek revenge on those who wronged him.
His lust for vengeance leads him down a murderous path, and aided by the ever-entrepreneurial Mrs Lovett they slash and bake their way to ruin, selling plenty of flavoursome meat pies along the way.
Winner of Best Musical and Best Original Score at the 1979 Tony Awards, Sondheim’s thrilling music is soaring, operatic, dark and complex, and is performed in this semi-staged production by RCM singers with students and graduates from other leading conservatoires and drama schools and accompanied by an orchestra of 32.
