Programme to include:
Bartók Divertimento for String Orchestra
Sibelius Symphony no 1 in E Minor op 39
Orchestras from the Junior Department perform an impressive programme featuring Bartók's surprisingly buoyant Divertimento for Strings – one of the last works he wrote before fleeing Nazi Europe in 1940.
Sibelius's first official symphony, on the other hand, touches on the tragic. The work marked Sibelius as a new and original voice in the world of a symphonic composition, and contains a dreamy clarinet solo in the first movement that is not to be missed.
