Autumn Season 2016 Announced

The Royal College of Music is delighted to announce its 2016 Autumn Season, which sees Bernard Haitink return to conduct the RCM Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in two performances of Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé.

Maestro Haitink’s visit forms part of an internationally focused season, which includes appearances by a number of major guest artists from around the globe, including the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet, members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Dutch renaissance recorder consort The Royal Wind Music, international contemporary music performers Ensemble Nikel, Austrian violinist and conductor Thomas Zehetmair, principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic Stefan Dohr, German trumpet virtuoso Matthias Höfs and Welsh dramatic soprano Dame Gwyneth Jones. The visits will include diverse recital programmes, thrilling performances alongside RCM musicians and inspirational public masterclasses.

The annual RCM International Festival of Viols celebrates its tenth season with a two-day programme of events, including the UK premiere of the recently discovered 12 Fantasies for Viol by Georg Philip Telemann performed by a host of acclaimed viol players and a Grand Finale concert featuring the renowned historical instrument ensembles Fretwork and the Magdalena Consort.

The RCM promotes new music throughout the autumn, performing works by eminent contemporary composers from the 20th and 21st centuries, including several world premieres. RCM New Perspectives pays tribute to the life and work of the late Pierre Boulez, explorensemble celebrates the 70th birthday of RCM alumnus Michael Finnissy and RCM musicians recognise the distinguished career of composition professor Joseph Horovitz, who turned 90 this year.

Later in the season the RCM International Opera School presents Mozart’s early comic opera La finta giardiniera, sung in Italian and conducted by Director of Opera Michael Rosewell.

The RCM continues its programme of live online broadcasts, sharing the work of talented RCM musicians with a global audience. This season’s live broadcasts include the RCM Symphony Orchestra’s performances of Daphnis et Chloé with Bernard Haitink and Beethoven’s Symphony no 7 with Thomas Zehetmair.
