Five RCMJD Musicians to Compete in BBC Young Musician 2016

Monday 25 January 2016

No fewer than five talented young musicians from the RCM Junior Department have made it through to the category finals of BBC Young Musician 2016.

Current RCM Junior Department (RCMJD) horn player Ben Goldscheider, pianist Tomoka Kan, percussionist Joseph Parks and flautist Marie Sato and RCMJD alumna violinist Stephanie Childress have all been selected to take part in the prestigious competition.

They are all hoping to follow in the footsteps of the RCM musicians who have won the three most recent BBC Young Musician competitions: Martin James Bartlett (2014 winner), Laura van der Heijden (2012 winner) and Lara Melda (2010 winner).

Miranda Francis, Head of Junior Programmes at the RCM, comments: ‘I am thrilled that so many RCM Junior Department students have been selected to perform in the BBCYM category finals.  They are all incredibly talented performers, and they have been supported and inspired by an exceptional team of RCM and RCMJD teachers. We are all so proud of them, and wish them well!’

You will be able to watch the young musicians' progress in the competition on BBC Four over the next few months, leading up to the competition final at the Barbican, London, on Sunday 15 May.

Good luck to them all!
