The RCM Festival of Percussion returns with one of the world’s leading drummers, Mark Guiliana. Admired across the spectrum from jazz and rock to electronic music, he has appeared on a string of acclaimed recordings including David Bowie’s final album.

Entry to Festival events is on a first-come-first-served basis.

Sessions marked with * are particularly suitable for families.

Trade Fair: With representatives from some of the world’s leading percussion companies.*

Interactive Zone: Calling all drummers! Test your ability to keep time in our performance simulator and beat your way to the top of our leaderboard.*

11am | Shades of Swing with James Powell: James Powell and his band explore the sounds of swing, blues and jazz.


11.15am | Let’s Play Percussion: Come as a family and try out percussion instruments including the gamelan, cajon and drum kit.*


11.15am | Junior Showcase: A series of mind-blowing performances from some of the UK’s top young percussion groups.*


12.15pm | Royal Opera House Percussionists: Hear favourite opera and ballet repertoire performed by members of the Royal Opera House Percussion Section.


1.30pm | Lunchtime Concert: The Coldstream Guards join forces with O Duo and RCM percussionists for an entertaining, family-friendly concert.*


3pm | Mark Guiliana in Conversation & Drum Clinic: The legendary Mark Guiliana sits down with Mike Dolbear before showing us his incredible skills. To open the session, we’re delighted to welcome 2018 Young Drummer of the Year JJ Wallace.


3.15pm | ‘Close up and Personal’ with John Chimes: Former BBC Symphony Orchestra timpanist John Chimes shares over 40 years’ experience in the business.


3.30pm | Samba Family Workshop: Learn how to play samba with The Lion King percussionist Damien Manning.*


5pm | Ensemble Bash: Experience the quirky performance style of acclaimed group Ensemble Bash.


6pm | James Powell Jazz Trio: Grab a drink and enjoy the musical stylings of James Powell, Jim Watson and Chris Dodd.

The RCM provides refreshments for students, visitors and staff throughout the year. There is also a range of restaurants, cafés and other establishments nearby, most adjacent to South Kensington station.

Lunch & snacks

BaRCM offers a great range of hot and cold snacks and beverages each weekday between 9am and 4pm as well as delicious full lunch options between 12pm and 2pm.

Evening performance refreshments

The RCM offers a range of pre-performance and interval refreshments, plus a selection of light snacks for those attending evening events in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall and the Britten Theatre. These are served between 6pm and 9pm (5pm for early evening performances) in the Britten Theatre Bar or the RCM Foyer Bar.

The main entrance to the RCM has eight steps up from the pavement and two inside the main doors. A lift is available for visitors with limited mobility. The lift is built into the smaller staircase to the left of the main entrance steps. There is an intercom button on the control panel, which can be seen and reached easily from the street. On arrival, press the buzzer to notify a member of RCM staff, who will come out to meet you and operate the lift for you.

All our event venues can be accessed by visitors with limited mobility via the lift at the main entrance.
