RCM musicians perform in one of London's most celebrated venues, Wigmore Hall, in a programme in which darkness and light are in constant flux.
Schoenberg's early masterpiece Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) was composed in just three weeks in 1899. This rare example of programmatic chamber music was inspired by Dehmel's poem of the same name depicting a man and woman walking through a dark forest on a moonlit night, the woman burdened by a heart-breaking secret.
The piece is framed by works including Jongen's Concert from the 1920s, Shostakovich's Two Pieces for String Octet, and Light Perpetuum by RCM alumna Laura Snowden – a composer-guitarist whose compositions have been featured on BBC Radio 3.
