Opera Double Bill: Debussy and Ravel

Stellar singers from the Royal College of Music Opera Studio bring to life Debussy’s biblical parable and Ravel’s magic realist fantasy.  

Debussy’s richly orchestrated L’enfant prodigue (The Prodigal Son) showcases the composer’s trademark melodic gestures and expressive detail in a retelling of the Bible story. 

In Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges (The Bewitched Child) animals and animated objects teach an unruly child a lesson in empathy after he is sent to his room, with the action leading us into a lush garden. The opera sets a libretto by Colette, the celebrated author of Gigi.
