Paying fees

Students chatting in the RCM's entrance hall
By now you should know how you will pay your tuition fees for the forthcoming year. The Royal College of Music expects you to pay your fees in full for the whole year, or pay the first instalment of an approved instalment plan, by induction week.

Payment of fees can be made online, whether you are paying in full or by instalments. The amount due will already take account of any scholarship you have been awarded, if applicable. Payments arranged online, whether in full or by instalment, will be taken automatically on the first day of term.

Pay online

It is also possible to pay by other methods, however these will require you to pay the full amount up front. Instalments can only be set up online.

Please note that you will not be sent an invoice automatically. If you have a sponsor who requires an invoice, you can request one from the Finance department.

Do I have to pay tuition fees?

Some students do not have to pay tuition fees. However, there may be other charges that need to be paid relating to reassessment, deferred assessment and/or loan of RCM instruments. You will have been notified if you need to pay any such fees.

Students with loans, scholarships or sponsors may have some fees to pay depending on how much their financial support is able to cover.

The following students do not have to pay tuition fees:

  • Home and eligible EU undergraduate students with a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company that covers the full cost of tuition for the year
  • Students with a full fees scholarship

Students on the following programmes do not pay tuition fees directly to the RCM:

  • RCM/NAFA Degree Programmes
  • Boston University Experience Programme
  • Princeton University Experience Programme
  • Exchange Programmes
  • Doctoral students who have submitted their thesis

All students not listed above must pay tuition fees.

Payment of other charges

The RCM online payment portal can also be used to pay other fees such as reassessment fees, deferred assessment fees or string instrument loan fees. These fees must be paid in full. Part-payment or payment by instalment is not permitted.

You will have been notified if you are required to pay any of these charges.

Penalties for late payments & non-payment

If you pay late, you may have to pay an additional charge of £50 (on each occasion).

Late payers will have their access to Asimut, the RCM’s practice room booking system, suspended.

If you have not paid your fees by Monday 23 October 2023, you may be suspended.

If you are in debt to the RCM (tuition fees, reassessment or deferred assessment charges), you will not receive end-of-year results, transcript or a certificate. Those with debt over £1,000 will not normally have their results considered by the Board of Examiners and will not be able to attend graduation.

Foreign nationals wanting to open a UK bank account

Before allowing overseas students to open a bank account, most UK banks require a letter from the RCM confirming registration. Registered students can request a letter by completing the form on learn.rcm. Once requested, your electronic letter will be emailed to you.

We receive a very high volume of requests during the first few weeks of term, so please allow at least five working days for your request to be processed.

Please note we are unable to confirm registration for new students until the new student check-in process is completed.

Enquiries

If you have any enquiries about fee payment, please contact our Student Finance team. Please be aware that this is a busy time of the year so you may not receive a response immediately. We will try to get back to you within three to five working days.
