We have a large number of exchanges available with leading European, American, Japanese, South Korean and Australian music conservatories and universities. These exchanges provide an excellent opportunity to study abroad at other revered institutions as part of your RCM studies.
Many students who take advantage of such opportunities make connections that enable them to work overseas when they graduate from the RCM, often launching international careers.
‘My teacher, a member of the New York Philharmonic trumpet section, was really encouraging and inspiring.’
‘I can strongly recommend it to anyone who is interested in gaining a wide variety of experience.’
‘I got to know a new city and make new friends. Also changing teachers and learning different views and techniques gave me a different perspective to my playing. Everyone should try it!’
Most outgoing exchanges are for a period of one term during the Autumn term, although there is an option for BMus students to undertake exchanges in the USA or Australia for a full year.
Erasmus+ and the Turing Scheme
The Government has decided that, following the UK's withdrawal from the EU, we will no longer participate in the European exchange programme, Erasmus+. However, funding for outgoing exchanges will still be available through the new Turing mobility scheme, and the good news is that this funding now extends to non-European destinations too!
The RCM is currently in the process of negotiating new bilateral exchange agreements with its former Erasmus partners. Therefore, please note that information on European partner institutions for exchanges in 2022/23 and beyond is subject to change. Current RCM students planning an exchange in the 2022/23 should consult the latest advice on Learn.RCM.
The list below shows the RCM’s current partner institutions for student exchanges. We are currently in the process of renewing our agreements with our European partners, so this list may be subject to change for exchanges commencing in 2022 and beyond.
The availability of some exchange destinations in 2022/23 may also be affected by international travel restrictions due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
