Below you can find some of the most frequently asked questions about Graduation.

All the information you need should be available on the Graduation website, so please read all the pages thoroughly. All graduating students will also receive direct communications in the run-up to the event, so remember to check your emails. If you still cannot find the answer to your question, you can contact us directly.

Attendance

What happens if I miss the deadline to confirm my attendance at Graduation?

After the deadline the seating plans for the ceremonies will be fixed. We will make every effort to accommodate you if you respond late, but we cannot guarantee that this will be possible.

To avoid problems, please ensure that you confirm your attendance before the deadline.

Can I choose to defer my graduation ceremony to another year?

Unfortunately not. It is only possible to graduate with your classmates in your course and yeargroup.

What happens if I have a late assessment and will miss the main Board of Examiners?

If you have a late assessment that will take place in June, you should confirm your attendance by the deadline as normal. Provided your assessment will take place in time for the Board of Examiners to approve your results before the ceremony, you should still be able to attend Graduation.

However, if your results are not confirmed by the time the Graduation Programme goes to press (generally a week before the ceremony), you should be aware that it may not be possible for your name to be printed in it. If you think this may affect you, you can discuss your situation with the Academic Registrar or the Deputy Academic Registrar.

If you have a very late or deferred assessment and it is not possible for your results to be confirmed by midday Tuesday of Graduation week, you will be invited to attend next year’s Graduation ceremony.

Can I choose to attend the other ceremony and reception so I can graduate with my friends?

Unfortunately not. It is only possible to graduate with your classmates on your course and yeargroup.

Is it possible to attend the reception without attending the ceremony?

Unfortunately not. Due to fire regulations numbers have to be restricted, and we are not able to issue additional tickets for the reception only.

What if I need a visa to attend the ceremony?

If you are an international student and completed your course last year, so no longer have a valid Student visa, you will be able to enter the UK to attend the ceremony on Standard Visitor permission. This also applies to family members who may be travelling to the UK to watch you graduate. Nationals of many countries (including EEA nationals) do not need to apply for entry clearance in advance. Nationals of other countries need to apply in advance for a visa. You can find out more about entering the UK as a visitor and check whether you need to apply in advance on the Gov.uk website.

The RCM can provide a letter to support your visa application.  Please e-mail your request to international@rcm.ac.uk

Guests & guest tickets

What happens if I miss the deadline to order guest tickets?

After the deadline Box Office staff will review whether there any spare tickets remaining.

Remaining tickets will be made available to students who wish to purchase additional tickets. If you have missed the deadline,  tickets may still be available at this stage, but  they will be allocated on first come first served basis. Contact the Box Office to check availability.

We strongly recommend that you book your guest tickets by the deadline, to avoid disappointment.

Why is there a limit on the number of guests I can bring?

There is limited capacity in the Britten Theatre and Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall. To ensure all graduands who are attending have the chance to bring at least one or two guests, there is a maximum allowance of two guest tickets per graduand. If places remain we will give graduands the chance to purchase additional tickets, but this will depend on uptake and is not guaranteed.

If I am not using one or both of my guest tickets can I give them to a friend so they can bring extra guests?

Unfortunately not. There is limited space in the Britten Theatre and we need to ensure there are enough seats available for all the students who are attending the ceremony. It would be very unfair if one graduand had four guests and another could not bring any.

The same applies if you are not attending Graduation in person. Only graduands who have already confirmed their attendance can purchase guest tickets.

Box Office staff will be closely monitoring who has purchased guest tickets and will only sell them to graduands who have already confirmed their attendance at the ceremony.

What if I want to bring an additional guest?

Guest tickets are initially limited to a maximum of two per graduand and are only available to graduands who are attending the ceremony.

After the deadline Box Office staff will review whether there any spare tickets remaining. Remaining tickets will then be released for sale to students who wish to make additional purchases.

However, there is no guarantee that there will be additional tickets available, so we recommend that you should not rely on being able to make additional purchases or make firm travel plans on the basis of expecting an extra ticket.

To enable friends and family who cannot join you at your ceremony to see you graduate, the RCM intends to stream the ceremonies live on the RCM website and RCM YouTube channel.

Gowns & photography

Can guests take photographs during the ceremony?

Yes, of course. However, we ask that guests do not use flash when taking photographs in the ceremony itself and avoid obstructing the view of others.

Everybody is free to take as many photographs as they like, with or without flash, during the reception.

If I am having my official photo taken on Wednesday where can I get a gown for the photo?

The gown supplier is sending one of each type of gown for the photographer to use on Wednesday, so a gown will be available for you to wear in your photo. You can then collect your own gown as normal on Thursday.

Find out more about gowns

What happens if I can't collect my gown on Thursday?

Where possible we recommend that you collect your gown the day before Graduation to avoid long queues on the day, especially if you are having your photo taken on Thursday.

However, if this is not possible, for example if you will not be in London on the Thursday, you will be able to collect your gown on the morning of Graduation.

There is no need to notify Northams which day you wish to collect your gown.

If I am not able to get my official photo taken on Wednesday or Thursday can I do it on Friday instead?

Due to the need to photograph the Ceremonies, the photographer will not be running a session on Friday, so you must come on Wednesday or Thursday. If this is completely impossible, you can contact the photographer at chris@photochris.co.uk to see whether he can make a special arrangement for you, but this is not guaranteed.
