Lancashire born Alex Edmundson was appointed Principal Horn of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 2021. Prior to joining the RPO, Alex was Co-Principal Horn of the London Symphony Orchestra for six years. He studied with Jeffrey Bryant at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, before continuing as  Master of Music scholar at the Royal College of Music under Simon Rayner.

Alex regularly performs internationally as Guest Principal with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. As a Master of Music scholar and soloist, he has performed the Britten Serenade and the complete Mozart & Strauss Concertos, at venues including LSO St Luke’s & Cadogan Hall, and made his concerto debut with the RPO in 2022.

Alex also frequently works on many film sessions, including as Principal Horn on the 2018 Oscar-winning movie (Best Picture and Best Original Soundtrack), Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water. He was appointed Deputy Head of Brass & Horn Professor of the Royal College of Music in 2023.

Alex lives in London with his wife Eve-Marie, a French cellist, and their two daughters.
