Arensky Variations on a Theme of Tchaikovsky
Head of Strings Mark Messenger leads the RCM String Band in a concert of entertaining ensemble works.
Originally written for a string quartet, the movement which became Arensky’s Variations on a Theme of Tchaikovsky proved so popular among audiences that the composer re-arranged the music for string orchestra. It is based on the theme from the song ‘Legend’, one of Tchaikovsky's Sixteen Children's Songs. Alongside, two works by Pulitzer Prize-winning composers: New Yorker Caroline Shaw, and African American composer and pianist George Walker.
Recorded live in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall on 28 October at the Royal College of Music in London, this is an on-demand broadcast event.
Support the RCM
The RCM’s autumn season is free to watch online, but the College welcomes gifts of every size to its Scholarships Fund, through which talented young musicians can access world-class education, regardless of their financial means. More than 50% of RCM students currently receive financial support from the College, but with rising tuition fees and costs of living set against a backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, your support is more vital than ever.
