Carina Cosgrave

Carina is an internationally sought after bass player specialising in informed performance 
practices. An alumna of the Royal College of Music she studied both modern and baroque bass 
there with Peter Buckoke, later moving to the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague to pursue 
her growing passion for historical bass instruments and studying with Maggie Urquhart. 

Performing on historical instruments and rediscovering the sounds of the past plays a significant 
role in Carinas work. Since returning to London, Carina has performed as a freelancer combining 
chamber music projects, recordings, orchestral playing and operatic and theatre performance. She 
performs regularly as guest principal with many established early music ensembles, including The 
English Concert, the Sixteen, Vox Luminis, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and her 
playing can be heard on a range of award winning recordings, with groups such as Les Siécles, La 
Nuova Musica, Florilegium, the Dunedin consort, Ensemble Marsyas and the Consone Quartet.

Teaching is central to Carina's practice and she is passionate about working with students at all 
stages of their musical journey. Along side her class at the RCM Carina has adjudicated bass 
competitions and recital exams, worked with the Benedetti foundation as a tutor on their baroque 
sessions, coached chamber music groups, delivered workshops to conservatoire students as part 
of the Academy of Ancient Music's education work and for many years has been involved with the 
many faces of the OAEs education work.
