Frederick Lam

Frederick Lam is Croucher Trust Fellow at the Royal College of Music, where he undertakes research within the Centre for Performance Science (CPS), working closely with Imperial College London. His research, generously supported by the Croucher Hong Kong Charitable Trust, focuses on interventions and practices that stimulate coping skills, resilience, and institutional support, in relation to the health and well-being of performing artists.

Frederick’s doctoral work explores the development of coping strategies and psychological resilience among conservatoire musicians, which also examines support for musicians’ career development. His doctoral research project received a graduate award for a poster presentation at the International Symposium on Performance Science, 2021, in Montreal, Canada. Frederick is also a member of the MedTech SuperConnector accelerator program in partnership with GSK Consumer Healthcare and Imperial College London, supported by Research England. During the programme, he founded OccuPain™, a web-based application for emerging patients’ occupational demands and information, and enhanced digital pain indication technology for the screening of pain problems.

Frederick began his formal studies in classical music at the Hong Kong Baptist University, and later on obtained his Bachelor of Music from Goldsmiths, University of London. He was awarded a Master of Science in Performance Science degree from the Royal College of Music, London in 2018, where his thesis explored the relationships between self-compassion, coping, and negative emotions in musicians. As a solo violinist and chamber musician, he regularly performs in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. He is an associate fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
