Robert Murray
Robert Murray is one of Britain’s leading lyric tenors, internationally admired for the breadth of his repertoire across opera, concert, and recital performance. A graduate of Newcastle University, the Royal College of Music, and the National Opera Studio, he was also a Jette Parker Young Artist at the Royal Opera House. He began his career with the Monteverdi Choir, The Sixteen, and Gabrieli Consort & Players before establishing an international solo career. Alongside performance, he is committed to teaching and mentoring young singers, serving as Vocal Professor at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana and giving masterclasses internationally.
Murray’s repertoire ranges from Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart, and Bach through Britten, Janácek, Strauss, and Wagner to composers including Henze, Birtwistle, Benjamin, Adès, Knussen, and Wigglesworth. He has appeared with the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Opera North, Welsh National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Garsington Opera, La Scala, Bayerische Staatsoper, Komische Oper Berlin, Theater an der Wien, and the Salzburg Festival. Concert engagements include appearances with the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra with conductors including Gardiner, Downes, Pappano, Gardner, Mackerras, Christophers, McCreesh, Gergiev, Hickox, Bolton, Bedford, Nézet-Séguin, and Wilson.
His recordings include the Gramophone Award-winning Peter Grimes and The Midsummer Marriage under Gardner, Handel’s Saul with Christophers and The Sixteen, and acclaimed recordings of Elijah and Grande Messe des morts with McCreesh and Gabrieli Consort & Players. Collaborations with pianists Martineau, Johnson, Burnside, West, and Middleton, alongside projects with the Brisbane-based circus company Circa, reflect the breadth of his artistic work.
