Matthew Marriott
Matthew Mark Marriott is a British former operatic tenor, originally from Banbury in Oxfordshire. He began his musical training as a specialist musician at Wells Cathedral School in Somerset, studying organ, piano, and singing, before continuing his vocal studies at the Royal Academy of Music, the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, undertaking both undergraduate and postgraduate training, including attending the opera school.
As a teacher for over twenty years, he has established an international reputation for developing young singers, with students progressing to major institutions and professional programmes in the UK, Scandinavia, the USA, and across Europe. His work has contributed to singers entering Young Artist Programmes and soloist positions, including Stuttgart, Frankfurt, the Norwegian National Opera, the Opéra de Lyon Studio, and the Jette Parker Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. His students have also achieved success in major international competitions, including reaching the semi-final and final stages of the Belvedere Competition, the Queen Sonja International Singing Competition in Norway, and the Renata Tebaldi International Singing Competition in both the Opera and Baroque categories.
Matthew’s teaching is grounded in the Italian bel canto tradition, with a strong emphasis on technical coordination, vocal balance, musical intelligence, and long-term vocal development. As a trained pianist, he places particular importance on the relationship between vocal technique, language, style, and musical interpretation. His teaching is characterised by clarity, structure, and an individual approach tailored to each singer.
He is in demand internationally as a teacher and masterclass leader, and is regularly invited to give masterclasses and to work as a visiting professor at summer programmes and festivals across Europe.
Alongside his position as Vocal Studies Professor at the Royal College of Music, Matthew continues to run his private voice studio in Oslo and London, and has worked extensively in universities and specialist institutions across Norway. He continues to support singers at undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional levels, helping them develop the technical security, musical understanding, and artistic maturity required for progression into professional pathways.
