Neil Baker studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal College of Music in London, before completing his training at the Dutch National Opera Academy with Margreet Honig in Amsterdam.

He began his professional singing career in the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus and made his international operatic debut under the direction of Marc Minkowski in the role of Harald in Wagner’s Die Feen at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. Further collaborations with Minkowski brought performances of Le nozze di Figaro at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Baden-Baden and Tokyo. His operatic repertoire has encompassed roles including Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas), Demetrius (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Escamillo (Carmen) and Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro).

As a concert soloist, Neil has appeared at major venues and festivals throughout Europe, including the Salzburg Festival, the Barbican Centre, Salle Pleyel in Paris and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Engagements have included performances with Ensemble Pygmalion under the direction of Raphaël Pichon , Les Musiciens du Louvre and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Alongside his performing career, Neil began teaching in 2003 and has since established an international reputation as a voice teacher. His students perform at many of the world’s leading opera houses including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera New York, Lyric Opera of Chicago, La Scala Milan, the Vienna State Opera and the Bavarian State Opera, as well as with some of today’s foremost ensembles and conductors. Over the past decade, Neil has devoted himself entirely to vocal pedagogy and the artistic development of young singers.
 
Neil joined the vocal faculty at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in 2013 and, in 2026, was appointed Professor of Vocal Studies at the Royal College of Music. He is regularly invited to teach internationally,  most recently at the National Youth Opera Aotearoa in New Zealand.
