Mark Austin
Mark Austin is a versatile conductor, pianist, and coach, known for his work across opera, orchestral music and song. A graduate of Cambridge University and Royal Academy of Music, he was elected an Associate of the RAM in 2019 and was a finalist in the Chicago Symphony Solti Conducting Competition. He has worked with opera companies including the Royal Opera, Opéra national de Paris, Garsington, The Grange Festival and Folkoperan, Sweden and with orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, Britten Sinfonia, Aurora and Orchestre de chambre de Paris. As Associate Conductor of The Bach Choir, he recorded music by Joe Hisaishi for Deutsche Grammophon.
International appearances have taken him from Queen’s Hall at the Edinburgh International Festival to the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre, and he has assisted with leading UK orchestras at venues including the BBC Proms. As a recitalist he regularly collaborates with leading singers, and his discography includes ‘Songs from Faust’ and an album of English song with mezzo-soprano Anna Harvey. As a writer, his recent publications include a chapter on Goethe and the Musical World (Cambridge University Press) and articles on Strauss, Mozart, and Gluck.
