Philip Box studied horn with Bill Grant and Neill Sanders, and Ifor James at the Royal Academy of Music. After a brief spell freelancing (including with the Royal Shakespeare Company as a forest lord in As You Like It), he joined the BBC Midland Light Orchestra as principal horn in 1968 and moved to the CBSO as third horn in 1973.

In 1975 he started freelancing in London, working with a wide variety of orchestras and ensembles (including the Philharmonia, the BBC SO, the City of London Sinfonia, Kent Opera and Festival Ballet), in a wide variety of musical genres. In 1977 he married Margaret Ogonovsky, who teaches flute at the RCM Junior Department.

Philip is also a Senior Orchestral Tutor at the RCM Junior Department.
