Royal College of Music announces new scholarship with Nord Anglia Education

Thursday 7 October 2021

RCM postgraduate cellist Shizuku Tatsuno has been awarded the inaugural Nord Anglia Education Scholarship to support her studies for the 2021/22 academic year.

The RCM scholarship, funded by Nord Anglia Education will help the chosen student access a world class performing arts education at the UK’s top conservatoire. The first recipient of the award is Shizuku Tatsuno, currently studying the cello for a Master of Performance (Strings).

Tatsuno, originally from Japan, started playing the cello when she was five years old and is now into her sixth year studying at the RCM. In addition to receiving world class tuition from leaders in the field, Thomas Carroll and Richard Lester, she has used her personal experiences to inspire her own compositions.

Lily Harriss HonRCM, Director of Development and Alumni Engagement, RCM, said: “The past two academic years have been incredibly challenging, and educating talented young musicians is more important than ever. While the RCM is adapting innovatively and efficiently to the current climate, our capacity to provide the widest access to musical excellence is dependent on the philanthropic support of generous donors. Nord Anglia Education’s vital support enables the RCM to offer the highest levels of training, performance opportunities and facilities to the next generation of musicians.”

Dr Elise Ecoff, Group Director of Education, Nord Anglia Education, said: “At Nord Anglia, we believe that the performing arts is an essential part of education and have seen how it transforms students. From promoting creativity to confidence and communication, the performing arts are truly a force for good. We are proud to build on our commitment to the performing arts and support the Royal College of Music and the next generation of talented musicians.”

Every student who applies for a place on one of the RCM's performance or composition courses commencing in 2022 will be considered for scholarship and scholars play a full and active role in college life.
